The road to Chevlon Crossing is a several mile long dirt road. It’s perfectly passable in a 2WD sedan. The Jeep was in for repairs, so we did this road in my old Cavalier. The view along the road is worth driving it by itself. This is a beautiful section of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

We arrived at our campsite early in the afternoon. Allyson took the dog down to Chevlon Creek to see if there was any water. She disappeared into the trees. A couple minutes later, she yells back that there is no water today. We heard a few gunshots off in the distance, but didn’t think much of it. I yelled out, just to make sure the shooters know we are in the area. Allyson starts to make her way back, when suddenly, the gunshots sound like they are feet away. I hear one of the bullets whiz past, and that’s when I yelled as loud as I possibly could, “hey, that one was too close”. I run back to the car and lay on the horn a few times. I hear a feeble, “sorry” then a white pickup truck drives off rather quickly.

We spent the rest of the day hiking through the creek. Other than the shooters, we didn’t see anyone else the entire time we were there. We cooked up some hot dogs over our portable stove. There were a few fire rings, that we could have built a fire in, but this time we were exhausted and didn’t want to build a fire. Plus, the rain clouds were coming in, and we didn’t want to get caught in the rain.

We did get a little rain that night, but it wasn’t too much, and didn’t keep us awake. In the morning we got up, enjoyed the view, and contemplated driving an additional 7 miles to a geocache by a lake. We ultimately decided that Allyson needed to get home to finish a work project that afternoon.

If you can avoid people with guns, I would recommend this remote campsite.
